Last week was busy. Just some of the things we worked on was going to IBESR, Parquet, MOI, and Immigration. Terriot and Magaly was downtown everyday. We also worked on finding an engineer to start on digging our footings for the guesthouse and orphanage at Fort Jacques. We are still planning on getting prefabricated buildings for the guesthouse and orphanage as soon as the plant that will be building them is finished in the Dominican. As far as we know, this is still the plan. Please be in prayer about this with us.
My house staff that I laid off after the earthquake has been receiving half pay this whole time because we thought we would receive lots of children and they could come back to work quickly. That has not happened and the decision was made to give them all their separation pay and let them find other work if they can. I think there were about 30 women that I had to let go. I am very sad and if we get more children in I may call some of them back to work, but for now, I want them to have a little money to set up a little business with their severance pay.
I am working on getting a different engineer to build our staff housing. Hopefully, Monday I will know more about the engineer and the cost. I did find some prefabricated steel beam housing that is being sent into Haiti and USAID is putting some up. I have seen them and they look really nice. They are much cheaper than conventional housing such as block and tin.
We also received word that Matthew HUFF an up and coming Nashville music star will be putting on a benefit concert in Johnson City, Tennessee for God’s Littlest Angels on Friday, July 23rd. Watch here for more details!
Matthew will also be coming to GLA in Haiti in August. GLA will featured in a “new” tv series called Rob and Mimi “On Tour On The Bus.” Producer Rob Frank is in Colorado at our office this week firming up details. The debut show will be a 2 hour special on a week long Haiti relief effort in August. Several well known country music stars have expressed interest in joining the project and coming to Haiti and working at GLA and also entertaining UN and relief workers in a special concert at the end of their stay.
The project camera team has already come while I was gone and shot background footage. This will be great exposure for GLA and we hope to get people involved in helping build housing, sorting and distributing supplies, working with the children, and visiting some of the tent cities. Our goal is that everyone who comes to Haiti to help should never leave here unchanged. We want them to take a little bit of Haiti home with them in their hearts!
John is up at Fort Jacques this whole weekend. He has one volunteer builder who has already arrived and another arrives today. He desperately still needs 3 or 4 people to come and help build the pole barn. Is there no one out there that can get a few days off from work to come and donate your time and talents to getting this done? Call Laurie at 719-338-7119 and make arrangements today!
All of the volunteers and foreign staff plan on going to Fort Jacques for a 4th of July Celebration Sunday afternoon and evening. The staff is planning games and a BBQ on the grill and a camp fire. I do not know if they plan on setting off a few fireworks this year or not, but we usually do. It just does not feel the same having the 4th of July in Haiti as it does in the USA! But it is fun! There will be a lot of fireworks this weekend because there are a lot of Haitian Americans here too that will have parties.
Today is a slow day for me. I am blogging and then answering emails. Everyone have a good weekend and for those of you in the USA, have a great 4th of July long weekend!
Oh, and I am feeling 100% better now! I thank everyone for all of your prayers!
