500 Boxes of Diapers?

Last Friday, I wrote that we're going to be filling a container in Michigan - with artificial grass and with diapers.   You can read about it at Talking About Diapers.

So, how do we get 500 boxes of diapers to my office in Michigan?    A couple of ways:

Obviously, you can ship them.   If you spend more than $50 at Amazon.com you can get free shipping and have them send them to my office.  Other stores offer the same type of thing.   The address:

God's Littlest Angels
c/o Tom Vanderwell
2260 Rosewood St.
Jenison, MI 49428

Or you can buy gift cards and send them.   I'll then go out and buy diapers using the gift cards.  We have the following "chain stores" that would work for that:

  • Costco
  • Sam's Club
  • Walgreens
  • Walmart
  • Target (just don't use your debit card)
  • CVS
  • Meijers (more of a Midwest store).

Send the gift cards and we'll use them to buy diapers and fill up the container.

I'm calculating that we need around 500 boxes of diapers to fill the remainder of the container - after we put the artificial turf in.   The turf won't be available until the spring thaw (it's quite frozen solid right now).   So, ideally, we'd like to get 500 boxes of diapers in the next 60 days.

Oh and on average, the cost of shipping is going to be approximately $.30 per diaper ($11,000 in total - including customs).   If you could help with that as well, that would be great.

If you're wondering if spending $11,000 to ship the container makes sense, let me share a few numbers with you.   The retail value of the artificial turf that has been donated is somewhere in the $20,000 to $25,000 range.   The diapers would cost probably $45,000 to buy them in Haiti (if we could even get them).   So we're looking at $65,000 (VERY rough numbers) and it costs us $11,000 plus the donations for the diapers - maybe another $10,000.

I'll spend $21,000 to acquire $65,000 worth of goods for the kids any day of the week.

Will you help?
