Whitney Palmer came to Haiti for the month of September. We enjoyed having her here helping with the children and helping us paint at Fort Jacques. It was a joy to see her every day and the love she poured out on the children! Thank you Whitney for sharing this blog with us!
You wake up with the sun, the birds chirping outside your window and the neighborhood dogs barking just down the street. As you step outside, the far off sound of small voices fills the air and you couldn’t be more ready to start the day. It’s a short walk down to the toddler house; anticipation grows as you wonder just what games you’ll play today.
When you walk in, the sound of laughter fills your ears as small feet run towards you, ready to be pushed on the swings. Next, it’s a round of “Duck, Duck, Goose!” which quickly dissolves into a bunch of children running circles around the playground. You watch with awe the boundless energy of a child. Suddenly, you feel many tiny hands pulling at your shirt. You’re surrounded by children wanting to be picked up, held, loved. You wish at that moment you had more arms, a bigger lap that could accommodate every one of them. So you sit down in the wooden chair, one child on each leg, giving hugs and listening to their words that you don’t quite understand. They start to sing, a simple song they learned in school, and it’s the most beautiful music you’ve ever heard. Before you know it, an hour has passed and it’s time to leave. You say your goodbyes and reassure them that you’ll be back tomorrow!
It’s a short 15 minute walk downhill to the main house; everywhere you turn you see people struggling to survive, yet never losing the smile on their faces as you greet them with a warm “Bonjour!”. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve made this walk, as you near the big green gate that houses God’s Littlest Angels you’re filled with excitement. You and the other volunteers get the balcony ready. Swings are hung, the floor is swept, the toys are out and ready for use. All it needs now is children! You walk into the nursery; your first baby of the day sees you and gives you a beautiful smile. She knows there’s fun ahead whenever you’re near! One after the other, your day is filled with the laughter and happiness that only children can bring. When it’s time to leave for the day, you give those last special hugs and head back to the guest house.
Dinnertime is filled with good food and conversation, as everyone shares stories and enjoys time together. Before you know it, it’s dusk and time to get ready for bed. It’s hard to believe the day has passed so quickly. Each one seems to go faster than the last. As the sun sets, your body is exhausted but your heart is full. You eagerly await the precious moments and memories tomorrow will bring.
