Celebration of Flag Day at Fort Jacques
For those of you reading this who have visited the tiny village of Fort Jacques, you are never going to believe the photos I am posting of the crowd that started arriving early today to celebrate a very important holiday in Haiti called FLAG DAY!
Flag day is always a huge celebration. School children start practicing different dances, marches, and speeches for weeks before the 18th of May each year. Then when the day comes, there is celebrations going on everywhere! Flags are flying and everyone is dressed in red and blue. Red and Blue are the colors of the Haitian flag.
Every year, the children at the Toddler House wave their Haitian flags as they walk through our local community. The volunteers and office staff along with the Haitian staff at the Toddler House walk with the children as they sing their songs.
Fort Jacques is an actual fort that was built in the early 1800’s. It is a very popular destination for families and school children during Haitian holidays. They bring their radios and large speakers and BLAST the music to the whole community! There are people selling food and flags and people are just having lots of fun.
I think the Haitian flag is absolutely beautiful. Don’t you? It makes me happy to see the children so proud of their flag.
