I just saw on CNN news that the UN expects more than 300,000 cases of cholera in the next 3 months. That is just outrageous! The Baptist Haiti Mission Hospital have their first confirmed case of Cholera. It is a man from Kenscoff that must have visited outside of the area or was exposed to someone outside the area. But now it is closer to the orphanage!
We have taken many preventive steps and they were in effect for 10 days now. No random visitors can enter the orphanages. We have visitors and teams that show up unexpectedly and the orphanage has always made them welcome. But effective immediately, teams who are not working at GLA can not enter the gates. This also applies to visitors not working at GLA. We just are trying to keep the children safe and healthy.
Our staff also must change shoes and wash with antibacterial soap each time they come to work or have been outside of the gate. We are setting up bottles of bleach spray to use on the truck and car tires each day before they are allowed back in the gate. Guests will have to walk over bleach soaked mats before entering the gate. This includes any one working at GLA too.
We can not fathom what it would be like if we had cholera spread through the orphanages! We have stopped all visits to the tent cities for now.
Please keep Haiti in your prayers and pray that the cholera will not affect any of our staff or children at GLA.
