These last two weeks have been a blur! We are full swing into Christmas preparation and the cheer is floating lightly in the air. Yesterday Kerby discovered that he could see his breath in the chilly mountain air. A first for him, since he had always been a city boy in the heat of Port Au Prince before he moved up with us. He was astounded. And Minoucar wanted to know why there was smoke coming from her mouth. Most of these children will be adopted to the North, and one Christmas hopefully not too far in their future they will experience so much more of the cool December weather that makes Christmas magical.
On December first we broke out the advent calendars. The kids have been talking about and counting the weeks till “Jesus’ Birthday” since mid October, so to have finally put up our calendars and begun the countdown was a confirmation that it is really going to happen. Mademoiselle Elange’s students personalized their calendar manger scenes by deciding where each member for the nativity should be placed. There was much discussion among the children as to where things “belonged”. And then a silence as they went to work. Laurore suddenly broke the concentration with a giggle and a proudly declared, “My sheep is flying in the sky above Jesus’ house!” Everyone had a different idea of who should stand where a fresh and new depiction from each of their heads as to how that blessed night might have looked.
