Foreign Staff Bios

John & Dixie Bickel

Founders, John and Dixie Bickel, along with their three older children, came to Haiti in September of 1991. The Bickels are originally from the state of Illinois, USA.

In 1995, the Bickel family adopted two of the children at the orphanage, Mark and Steeve. Mark currently attends university in Colorado and Steeve is working for GLA at Fort Jacques.

The Bickel Family started God's Littlest Angels when they took in their first premature baby on Christmas Day 1994.  The baby was not expected to live but she did live and is 20 years old!

The work in Haiti started with one baby but today the orphanage houses over 120 children, runs three schools for the children, and has a fully functioning NICU.

Dixie is a registered nurse and has 36 years of experience in pediatrics and intensive care nursing. She serves as the Executive Director and is responsible for working with the Haitian government and the daily running of GLA.

John is the Plant Operations Director for the mission and responsible for all building projects supervision.

The Bickels have five children, seven grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

Joyce Trainer

Joyce Trainer came to GLA in January of 2004 for a short-term stay and has been with us ever since. She is GLA's Director of Education. She is responsible for our English as a Second Language program and oversees all of the Haitian teachers who work with our children.  Joyce also assists the older children with their homework and helps in running the Toddler House. All of the children love Joyce because she is so much fun and likes to play around with them. She is a great asset to the orphanage.

Melissa Friesen

Melissa is from Manitoba, Canada.  She started volunteering at GLA in January 2006.  She spent several months volunteering with the children and helping in the office between 2006 and 2010. In January 2010 she started working and living at GLA full-time.  As our Adoption Coordinator, Melissa is responsible for keeping records on all of the children at GLA, taking monthly photos, and writing updates to adoptive families.  She works closely with the Haitian administrative staff to process all GLA adoptions.  A highlight of her work is seeing adoptions completed and children join their forever families.

Melissa recently became the legal guardian for her daughter, Christina, and will soon be adopting her here in Haiti.

Tim & Melissa Parker

Tim and Melissa Parker are from Monticello, Illinois.  They have volunteered at God's Littlest Angels since June 2010.  After falling in love with Haiti and GLA, Tim joined the staff full time in October 2012 and Melissa joined him in January 2013.  They operate the GLA guest house, hosting families and teams on a weekly basis. In addition to their guest house responsibilities, Tim is in charge of general vehicle and house maintenance, and also assist with the Fort Jacques construction projects. As of July 2015 Melissa is our Volunteer Coordinator, facilitation transportation and daily activities for the teams and volunteers that serve at GLA.The parkers have huge hearts for Haiti and love to play with all of our children here at GLA.

Chelsie Parker

Chelsie is Tim and Melissa Parker’s daughter. She first came to GLA as a volunteer in 2010, has lived in Haiti off and on, and officially joined GLA as a staff member in the summer of 2015. Chelsie is our office assistant ad also helps out in various roles at the guest house and main house. Chelsie is always eager to lend a hand wherever needed and her organizational skills are a great asset here at GLA.

Jeremy Pollock

Jeremy Pollock is from Phoenix, Arizona.  He is a home builder and owns his own business.  Jeremy has been volunteering at GLA for several years and has come 4 times to help build the Toddler Homes at Fort Jacques.  Jeremy has lots of experience in home building and construction work.  He has volunteered to come to Haiti for a week at a time to help build the guesthouse and supervise the plans and construction crews who will be volunteering at GLA.  Jeremy will be paying his own way and will be raising funds for his airfare through donations.  We are very happy to have Jeremy helping us in this way. Jeremy is married and has 4 little kids at home.

Joel & Ingrid Rockemann

Joel and Ingrid Rockemann are from Tracy, California.  For nine years, Joel and Ingrid have volunteered in Haiti on short term teams before making the move to work at GLA in July of 2016.  Joel serves as the Media & Computer specialist and works to keep the computer side of GLA up and running while helping to share the adventures and needs of the ministry to those who wouldn't otherwise have regular access to what we are doing at GLA.  Ingrid is the Toddler House Manager is blessed by the opportunity to get to live with and help care for the children at Fort Jacques.  Their two children, Owen and Ella, are excited to call Fort Jacques home and are enjoying being homschooled when they are not out exploring or playing with friends.
