Frantina’s doctor appointment with her neurosurgeon
On Monday, the MRI was finally done. We had to eventually wrap Frantina up in a blanket and tell the staff to just do it! She was not going to sleep through the test and we needed that MRI for Tuesday morning. The test showed only a slight change in the size of the mass. She had only received 18 days of treatment, so we did not expect a huge difference.
The neurosurgeon along with the pulmonary specialist decided that it was urgent that the pressure on her spinal cord be relieved. The pulmonary doctor said that she was no longer contagious so the neurosurgeon could open up her spinal cord without contaminating the surgery suite. They did decide that before she has surgery to relieve the pressure, that she would need to be on prednisone treatment for 30 days and then they will do a biopsy and try to aspirate (remove with a needle) whatever is in the mass area.
So she is scheduled to see the doctors again on the 10th of April and will have surgery on the 11th of April. She has gained 2 pounds and so she is doing better in that area although it is difficult to get her to eat food. She fights us every meal! We are supplementing her with Pediasure now because her hemoglobin has dropped some because she won’t eat except for a little bit at a time.
Please continue to pray for her and that the surgery on the 11th will help relieve that pressure on her spine. She will still need a surgery later to put a metal bar in her spinal cord to replace the two vertebrae that are damaged. The doctor told me that she was not a candidate for bone grafting because the MRI shows too much damage to the bone. He also said that he could not put the metal rod in yet because the bone was too weak and the nails would pull out. So pray….
