May 31st 2012 – Lanky and lethargic, staring blankly at the world through glazed over eyes wide with shock and fear Judeline didn’t seem to be able to process emotionally the trauma she had been and was going through. We had no history on this 32.5 lbs / 37 inch tall 7 yr old. Not every child is as resilient, nor as able to adapt in the same way as others. And whether Judeline had seen 1 yr of neglect or 7, we do not know, whatever the case her will for life was broken. Standing before us was the shell of a girl, going through the motions of breathing, eating, sleeping. Merely existing.
1 yr later – Unfortunately not every story has a happy ending, but instead is a long trail of small victories and losses. Physically Judeline is healthy and has put on 8.5 lbs and grown 3 inches. Emotionally Judeline has come a far way from the comatose frightful little girl she was a year ago, but the traumatic events of her life have done permanent damage that she’ll be struggling with for the rest of her days in one way or another. With each step of a healing a new emotion surfaces. We’ve seen them all, anger, withdrawal, aggression, defiance, affection, sadness, joy, shame, confusion, anxiety, and low self image. But today we celebrate the progress she has made, her silly personality, making others laugh with her funny faces, playing pretend, digging in the dirt, her interest in bugs, lizards, worms, and butterflies. We delight in her small victories, in watching as the layers of self protection fall away and she allows herself to take joy in the world around her and experience happiness in simple things.
“Lord my God, I take refuge in you;
save and deliver me from all who pursue me,”
To be continued…
