Please pray for Sophie

Sophie - 2 November 2010-1 Sophie took a turn for the worse yesterday and had trouble keeping her oxygen saturation levels in her blood high enough.  Then last night at 10:30 PM, Susan came and said she was not doing well again.  Before she came to GLA, she had been in General Hospital and they had stuck her in ever vein she had trying to get an IV in.  So all of her veins are very bad and tiny.  Susan and I worked for an hour trying to find a vein and get an IV into her so we could stop tube feeding her for the night and just let her have IV fluids.  I could get in but as soon as we put fluid on the vein it would infiltrate or just not run.

Finally, I gave up.  This morning, her oxygen goes way down when she cries or is handled much.  She is only 3 weeks early and weighs 4 1/2 pounds.  We think it is the heart problem that is causing her oxygen levels to drop, but she truly is not stable enough to go to the doctor yet to get her echocardiogram done.  Please pray that she stabilizes enough to go get the echo done.

Dixie, In looking at the way Sophie's hands are clenched with her hands overlapping, knowing she has a heart defect, and seeing some of her facial features, I am suspicious that she might have Trisomy 18. I know that at this point you have no way to test for that, but it is something to consider. I am currently working on my Master's to be a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner and am working on a presentation about Trisomy syndromes. She is very similar to a lot of the pictures I have seen of children with this syndrome.

Dixie, I agree with Allison. Sophie Dora looks like she has Edwards Syndrome. aka Trisomy 18. The clenched hands, low set ears, and heart deffects are common. Unfortunately, these children usually don't live very long. Hopefully her mother is getting to spend some time with her. I will be praying for you all.
