Progress on Staff House at Fort Jacques…
Georges and Joycelyne Gauvreau, first came to volunteer short-term at GLA in 2009. They came again just after the earthquake in 2010 and then returned to Haiti for a long-term commitment in Port-au-Prince in the summer of 2010. We did not really have a place for them at GLA when they came to Haiti, but it didn’t stop them from volunteering for all containers that came in and for inventorying all the supplies with another volunteer, Dave Williams.
In the last year, Georges and Jocelyne have become full-time volunteers at GLA. They are retired from their jobs in Canada and are self supporting. They moved into the staff house when their lease ran out on the home in Port-au-Prince at the end of July. It is not completely finished, but just needs a few finishing touches. John and Georges finished the kitchen countertops this past week and are working on getting everything painted one last time, water hooked up to the kitchen sink, the walls painted (they have been primed) and all of the trim around the windows and doors! We are very thankful for Georges and Jocelyne’s dedication to GLA and the people of Haiti and their willingness to give of themselves through their service at Fort Jacques and Port-au-Prince. God has blessed with so many wonderful staff and volunteers at GLA! I cannot thank God enough for all the wonderful people, foreign and Haitian, that work at GLA! Without them we could not do everything that we do today!
They have a working bathroom now and can actually take showers! Georges and John put gutters on the short side of the house. They said they would let “younger” men put them on the side that requires a tall ladder!
Getting the staff house built was a good “learning” experience and now the Toddler Houses should go up quickly! A team coming this week from Canada and led by Chris Davies (he and his wife, Lea, lived and worked at GLA for a year) will be building the walls for the Toddler Houses out of wood. Then the walls will be stored in our barn until the concrete pads are poured, and another team can come in and put the walls up.
Enjoy the photos of the staff house kitchen and new gutters! Some of the photos are from some months back but wanted to give you an idea of the whole change!
