After the earthquake, we started sending thank you notes from Haiti for larger donations. Last week, we took one of the thank you cards to the Post Office to check on the cost of postage. We had not sent any since summer time.
We were absolutely shocked when it cost $7.50 USD to mail a little 3x5 card!! President Martelly has changed many things here in Haiti and one is changing the rates at the post office! I don’t know how a Haitian could afford to send a letter to a relative in another country?
It is the same with custom fees when bringing in a shipping container. Those fees have also raised by about 50% even when it is things going to the orphanage for the children. I understand commercial items that you are going to resale, but why for donated items for an orphanage?
So, everyone who used to receive our thank notes with beautiful Haitian stamps on them, I’m sorry, we are not going to be able to do this anymore. We will mail the letters through our American Mail Service (Missionary Flights International), but the thankfulness and love sent with each card will be the same!
And Life in Haiti Goes On…..
