May 31st 2012 – Face, arms, and ankles enflamed by kwashiorkor. Little eyes with an unfathomable depth of sadness blinked open and closed reflecting fear of the unknown into which she was unconsentingly being carried away and immersed. Her skin was dry and taught, flaking off as nutrients started to reach those starved little cells, and reduce the swelling in her 22 lbs / 33 inch body. Withdrawn and afraid, we called her Ti Poupe – little doll – as she sat in the safety of a corner with a serene beauty, motionless and quiet observing the world, as though speaking would only draw unwanted attention to herself. Interaction with someone from this hostile world would break the invisible barrier between herself and it.
1 yr later – Meet Michael Jordan’s little sister. Djenylove. Sweet, timid, and sensitive in nature. Though still a healthy cautious around new faces entering her safe environment she has slowly let down those walls and allowed our love in. You can tell she has been protected by her brother’s fierce love. And that little heart, though scared at times, is gentle and compassionate. Ti Poupe is loved by all. She’d never hurt a soul. Never retaliating, never saying an unkind word, Djenylove’s eyes may well up with tears if someone takes her toy, but she would never pinch or hit a friend to get it back, she’d just watch with wounded heart that others don’t love her they way she loves them. Djenylove has a uniqueness about her that sets her apart from other children both in and out of the orphanage; she has a maturity in her view of people that even as adults we strive for but find it impossible to get to. She sees others as herself and truly treats, loves, shares, and cares for them as she would want to be treated herself. You can ask anyone here who Djenylove is, “Oh, Ti Love!!!” they’ll respond with a grin, because Djenylove lights up the lives of everyone around her. This morning the song in Ti Love’s heart flows out of her lips and she’s quietly singing “Let the Children Come to Me” as she slowly twirls around the yard…. Clearly her little voice carries over to me… “Jesus, when I am afraid I can come to you”
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John 13: 34-35
