Yesterday, I received a call from Real Hope for Haiti saying they had a 5 pound malnourished 3 month old whose mother was deceased and the grandmother had brought him for treatment. They have cases of Cholera in Cazale and did not want to take him into their clinic.
We will call him Erick here. Erick was so tiny. He was smaller than some of our newborns that come in! He had such a frightened look in his eyes. This is not uncommon for babies that are severely malnourished. I am sure that since mama died that the family could not purchase milk to give him. His little face was swollen and his belly, but his arms and legs were very thin.
It was very difficult to get him to suck. He wanted to suck but he could not swallow very well. Susan was giving him a special formula thickened with rice cereal with a syringe.
Susan and I discussed a care plan for Erick trying to get him to take fluids and also to swallow. This morning he was eating for Susan and all of a sudden he threw up his formula. When he did this, he choked. Immediately, Susan suctioned him but he had aspirated the formula. He continued to vomit and we continued to resuscitate him. His little heart stopped and we could not get his heart beat back.
This is the third baby that we have had die in the last few weeks. It is very discouraging and I just wish that families would bring sick babies to clinics sooner for treatment so that they had a chance to live!
