We have a day for giving thanks. (Thanksgiving)
We have two for getting deals. (Black Friday and Cyber Monday)
Now, we have #GivingTuesday, a global day dedicated to giving back.
On Tuesday, December 2, 2014, charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.
#GivingTuesday (2nd December) is a global day of giving. After the sales of Black Friday and the online shopping boom on Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is an opportunity to come together to show the world why it’s good to give. Whether it’s making a donation, volunteering your time or just spreading the word at the start of the Christmas shopping season, #GivingTuesday is a call to action for everyone who wants to give something back.
We always need funds to feed the children and pay for expenses and the month of December is when we raise enough funds usually for the next 3 months! But if you can’t give funds then volunteer or give of your time by going and speaking about GLA with a group, family or friends.
It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your work place or your church family to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. The simple idea behind #GivingTuesday is to encourage people, charities and businesses to donate time, money or their voice to help a good cause. Join us and be a part of a global celebration of a new tradition of generosity.
Actor Hugh Jackman, whose Laughing Man Worldwide donates 100 percent of its profits to Projects for All, said,“The holidays are, first and foremost, about goodwill and compassion. That’s why #GivingTuesday is a great way to not just remember that but live it as well.”
Another tradition that has come out of the #GivingTuesday Movement is taking an #unselfie photo of yourself or your family and putting it on instagram, twitter, or Facebook. Any social media is great!
Jeffrey Walker wrote in an article in the Huffington Post:
Oxford English Dictionary named “selfie” the word of the year for 2013. They did this because of the word’s tremendous increase in usage. Oxford goes on to define “selfie” as a picture taken of yourself that is planned to be uploaded to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat or any other sort of social networking website.
Let’s turn that trend, and everyone’s cameras, around and start taking “UNselfie” pictures. These “UNselfie” pictures could be of people doing good things, of acts of kindness, of compassion in action! Being UNselfish! And #givingtuesday is the perfect day to start the movement.
Use this hashtag #UNselfie and #givingtuesday to tweet a related message. Take a photo of you or others holding up a sign saying what you did to give back and then post it. Take a photo of the people you partnered with or provided a service to!
Please join us in launching our Christmas Holiday Giving Season by giving back in some way to GLA.
