NEONATAL INTENSIVE CARE UNIT
God’s Littlest Angels mission is to provide exceptional neonatal care and a safe haven to the smallest, sickest, and most vulnerable children of Haiti. Approximately, 1 in 8 infants in Haiti are born prematurely (before 37 weeks); causes rooted in maternal malnutrition, chronic food instability, preeclampsia, and other maternal health conditions. Infant mortality in Haiti is the highest within the Western Hemisphere; 34% of all childhood deaths occur within the first 28 days of life. In a country of 11.5 million people, the need for a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is immense. There are only 5 NICUs, including GLA, within the entire country.
Solving a problem.
Premature infants are at greatest risk for low birth weight, temperature instability, respiratory distress, infection, and jaundice. GLA’s NICU provides the necessary skilled nursing care and access to essential equipment such as warming incubators, IV fluids, IV antibiotics, CPAP machines, and oxygen; all of which can save an infant’s life and allow them to begin to thrive outside of the womb. 90% of our referrals are from hospitals in Port Au Prince that struggle to serve a population of 3 million. These hospitals are not staffed or equipped to care for premature infants and they rely on NICU facilities like the one at GLA to assist them in challenging circumstances. GLA is blessed with 24-hour trained nursing staff and a skilled consulting pediatrician. We also provide a place for the infant’s mother to stay (if she is able to) fostering much needed opportunities for bonding, feeding, and instructions on how to properly care for her infant. Our goal is for each premature baby to not only survive but to also thrive under the loving care of their nurse, ultimately being able to return home with their biological families once stable.
Make a difference by sponsoring the NICU today!
The GLA NICU is often what stands in between life and death for infants born prematurely. When you partner with GLA, you are standing in the gap for these precious little ones, providing them the opportunity to have access to life saving treatment, vital nutrition, and a loving environment where they can grow strong.
If you would like more information about what we are doing in Haiti, about opportunities to volunteer with us, or about partnering with GLA to raise support and awareness in your local area, please send us an email and we’ll make sure to respond to you as quickly as possible.
